As with anything the best way to not get overwhelmed is to take it a step at a time. Now, I’ve broken it down to just 4 key things and I’m sure that this will help you easily set up and track goals inside ClickUp… you know, so you can become the goal-crushing badass you were meant to be.
1. Pre-planning
First, when it comes to pre-planning, I personally use my Bulletproof Business Planner from Ask Yvi because it has a Goal Planning section. I start out by writing all of my goals on a quarterly basis. You can do the paper and pen method OR use your digital planner – it doesn’t matter as long as it’s something you use often.
Next, you will need to make a S.M.A.R.T. Goal, it’s an acronym for means Specific, Measurable, Assignable, Relevant, and Time-based – see, SMART!
2. ClickUp Structure

Here’s how I structure the SMART Goals inside ClickUp after I’ve pre-planned them and wrote them out inside my planner.
- Space – Goals Template
- Folder – Business Goals, Personal Goals, Habits to Develop
- List – Template Sales (1)
- Tasks – targets that we’re going to track (e.g. Task for Goal 1, Setup and find all templates, and Setup course platform)
Once you’re done mapping out and adding in details for the goal you want to track, then you can start creating the actual goal inside ClickUp.
3. Creating the Goal
In this example, I’m going to show you how to create ONE goal inside ClickUp:
1 / 9
Creating the Goal step 1
- Click on the Goals icon () at the bottom left-hand side of your ClickUp window.
- Click on the + NEW GOAL button.
- Add in the Goal name, then click OK (or press ENTER).
- Assign the owner or whoever is responsible for this goal, then click ok (or press ENTER).
- Note: You can assign more than one owner.
- Choose whether or not you want this goal to be viewed by everyone inside your ClickUp (insert name WORKSPACE) or if you want it set to a select few (PRIVATE), then click OK (or press ENTER).
- Set the due date if applicable, then click OK (or press ENTER).
- Add in the description, then click OK (or press ENTER).
- Goal is now created, now you can add in targets!
4. Track the Goal
With the structures in place and your goal set up, next you’ll need to add in the targets.
You will need to create a list then add in tasks that you can pull data from to track your goal. Depending on the type of goal you’re tracking, the progress can either be tracked automatically or manually… but we will get to those in a bit!
How to Create and Set Targets for Goals inside ClickUp
For Task-type Targets

What is the best way to view goals inside ClickUp?
There are actually two ways to view the goals you’ve set inside ClickUp.
Goal Dashboard – where you can use custom widgets to visually goal progress.

Goals Area – the fastest and easiest way to see an overview of the goal progress.

I, personally, prefer just hopping into the goals area because I’ve segmented my folders to make it super organized. Plus, I can access it immediately via mobile!
ClickUp Goal Setting & Goal Tracking Pro Tips

Conclusion:
To crush your goals in ClickUp, you need to do 4 key actions:
- Pre-planning is to get the seed idea of the goal and onto paper, so you can flesh it out before actually building structures inside ClickUp.
- Build ClickUp Structures when you have finalized the flow for the goal you have in mind. Spaces > Folders > List > Tasks… bear in mind that you will have some goals that overlap with each other and will need access to similar data.
- Create the Goal inside the goals area or on your goal dashboard… but like, ONLY if you’ve finished the first two listed above. Otherwise, you’re going to end up with a messy goal tracker!
- Track the Goal with targets and make sure you select the appropriate target type to make the most of the goal tracking feature. Remember that some target types will need to be manually updated to show goal progress (e.g. Number, Currency), so be mindful of keeping track of those data.
So, now that you have the gist of how to crush your goals inside, ClickUp, let me know in the comments and tell me what goal you’re going to set up and how easy it was.
Ambitious Wishes! and I’ll see you around.
